How Seedling ADU Builders Was Born

Ben Ortega started Seedling ADU Builders in 2001, but the decision happened a year earlier, standing in a backyard in Los Angeles watching a homeowner cry. She had saved for eight years to build an ADU for her mother, and the contractor she hired had walked away mid-project. The footings were poured wrong. The plans didn’t match the permit. She was out tens of thousands of dollars and had nothing but a hole in the ground and a stack of papers nobody would explain to her.

Ben wasn’t the contractor who messed it up. He was the third person she called to ask if it could be fixed. The first two said no, it’s too far gone, rip it out, start over, pay us another deposit. Ben walked the site with her for an hour, drew a sketch on the back of an envelope, and told her exactly what it would take to salvage the foundation and get the project back on track. He didn’t charge her for that visit. He just couldn’t stomach what she’d been through.

That moment clarified something Ben had been feeling for years. The construction industry, especially the ADU side, was full of people who saw homeowners as invoices. Nobody sat down and explained the real cost. Nobody talked about how the work would affect the family living in the main house during construction. Nobody treated the backyard like it was part of someone’s home, because it was. Ben promised himself he would build a company that did things differently: written prices before work starts, crews that clean up, and honest answers even when the answer is “this will cost more than you hoped.” That promise became Seedling ADU Builders. What began at a single location in Los Angeles has grown into a network of independently owned locations across the region and beyond, each one held to the same standard.

Ben Ortega’s Personal Connection to the ADU Trade

Ben grew up around construction, but not the kind that comes with a hard hat and a job site trailer. His family was always fixing something. A sagging fence post. A leaking roof over the carport. A back porch that got added one summer because the house felt too small and nobody wanted to move. Ben was the kid holding the flashlight, then the teenager mixing mortar, then the young adult who realized he actually understood how a structure goes together and why some hold up and others don’t.

ADU work found him slowly, almost by accident. A friend needed a garage converted into a small rental unit. Ben offered to help for a few weekends. He remembers the smell of sawdust mixing with the dry California air, the sound of a level tapping against a fresh stud wall, the satisfaction of standing inside a finished room that had been a cluttered garage three months earlier. The first tenant moved in a month after that. She was a nursing student who couldn’t afford an apartment. Ben watched her carry a box of books through the door and thought: this is what housing should feel like. Personal. Possible. Built with care.

That was more than a decade before Seedling ADU Builders existed as a name, but the feeling stuck. What gets Ben out of bed now is the same thing that got him out of bed for that garage project: the belief that adding a home to a lot isn’t just construction. It’s giving a family room to grow without leaving the neighborhood they love. It’s giving an aging parent a dignified place nearby. It’s giving a young person a first apartment. Ben has spent over two decades in this trade, and he still walks every finished ADU before handing over the keys. If he weren’t building ADUs, he’d probably be teaching young tradespeople how to read plans and talk to homeowners, because those two skills are rarer than they should be.

Meet Ben Ortega – The Person Behind Every Job

Ben Ortega is the Owner and Founder of Seedling ADU Builders. He has spent his entire career in residential construction, with more than two decades focused on accessory dwelling units, garage conversions, and backyard homes. He holds the licenses and certifications required for the work his locations perform, and every pro working under the Seedling ADU Builders name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. No exceptions.

What separates Ben from a corporate franchise technician is that he actually builds. He walks sites. He reviews change orders line by line. He answers questions from homeowners who are nervous because they’ve never done this before. Outside of work, Ben is a woodworker in the slowest sense of the word: he builds furniture that takes months because he’d rather do it right than do it fast. That patience shows up in every ADU project. His commitment to customers is simple: if it carries our name, it meets our standard.

Our Promise to Homeowners

Every Seedling ADU Builders location works to the same care promise. Shoe covers and drop cloths inside the house. Quiet tools when the kids are asleep. Pet-safe products where there is a choice. A photo of the clean-up before we leave. And a written price before any work starts.

This isn’t a slogan. It’s a checklist our crews actually follow. We know families with kids and pets are living in the main house while the ADU goes up. We know construction is disruptive. Our job is to make it less disruptive, and to leave the property cleaner than we found it. Every job is covered by The Cedarwell Care Promise.

Our Credentials

  • State-Licensed: Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires.
  • Insured & Bonded: Coverage is required before any crew sets foot on your property.
  • Decades of Experience: Our founder has worked in residential construction for more than twenty years, with a deep focus on ADU construction.
  • Written Pricing: Every job gets a written price before any work starts. No surprises, no change orders that appear out of nowhere.
  • The Cedarwell Care Promise: A standard every location is required to meet, from the first walkthrough to the final clean-up photo.

Why does any of this matter to a homeowner? Because you’re inviting a crew to work on your property, often while your family is still living there. A license means the people doing the work have met a baseline of competence. Insurance means you’re protected if something goes wrong. Written pricing means you’ll never get a surprise bill at the end. The Care Promise means your home gets treated like a home, not a job site. These things are not extras. They’re the minimum standard.

Rooted in the Communities We Serve

Seedling ADU Builders started in Los Angeles, and that city is still home to our founding location. But we don’t pretend to be from every town we work in. Each of our locations is an independent local business, owned and operated by people who live where they work, from Los Angeles and Long Beach to Anaheim, Riverside, Irvine, Santa Ana, Santa Clarita, San Bernardino, Fontana, Moreno Valley, Oxnard, and Huntington Beach. They agreed to work to the Cedarwell Care Promise because it matches what good local builders already believe: a small start, done right, grows into something lasting.
